You will not be turned down.
Your name will simply
not come up.
On the prediction that puts machines in the path of nine buying decisions in ten, the shortlists drawn before any room fills, and the difference between losing a decision and never entering it.
Before the year is out, somewhere in your category, a shortlist will be drawn for a purchase you were built to win. No committee will draw it. By the time the committee exists — the calendar invite, the conference room, the six stakeholders and their coffee — the field will already be set: three names, maybe four, assembled by a system that read the market the way systems read, overnight, without a single phone call. The meeting that matters will have happened before anyone met.
Gartner put a date and a number on this last October, and the sentence deserves printing whole: “By 2028, 90% of B2B buying will be AI agent intermediated, pushing over $15 trillion of B2B spend through AI agent exchanges.” Read the working word precisely. Intermediated: not completed, not signed, not automated end to end. The agents sit in the path of the decision, gathering candidates, screening claims, drafting the field the humans will choose from. People still sign. Increasingly, they sign from a list they did not write.
Which is where the arithmetic turns personal. A firm can lose a deal it entered and learn something — the debrief, the objection, the gap in the offer. What no firm can examine is the deal it never entered. When the drafting layer cannot resolve you, cannot verify the license or trace the record or corroborate the claim, it does not rule against you. It rules without you. There is no debrief for that, because there was no decision to lose. There was a field, and you were not in it.
Absence has a clinical name.
Decision Exclusion — the fifth clinical characteristic of Digital Derangement Syndrome™: decisions made without the entity ever entering consideration. The qualification exists, in full, in the physical world. The shortlist is drawn in the inferential one. Between them stands the drafting layer — systems that assemble the field from what they can verify: an entity that resolves cleanly, signals that agree with one another, corroboration that traces to sources already trusted. Where verification fails, consideration never begins.
Exclusion is not a verdict recorded anywhere. It is the absence of an entry. And as intermediation approaches nine buying decisions in ten, that absence stops being a visibility problem. It becomes the difference between a market a firm competes in and one it has never entered.
Edition No. 007 shares its number with fiction’s most famous secret agent — the man whose license no one ever asks to see. The desk notes the coincidence, and one thing more: in the stories, a credential nobody checks is mystique. In a market, it is the condition this record exists to document.
Decision Exclusion is the fifth characteristic. The four that precede it — Authority Misclassification, Signal Fragmentation, Contextual Ambiguity, Trust Transfer Failure — are the mechanism. Exclusion is the outcome. By 2028, it will describe the competitive position of every expert whose infrastructure was not built before the field was assembled.
A list you can enter before it is drawn.
The drafting layer is not hostile to you. It is empty where you should be — the same vacancy this record has documented since Edition No. 001, now seated in the path of the purchase itself. Answer Engine Authority™ is built for that seat: entity architecture the drafting agents resolve, corroboration they can trace, presence in the places where the field is assembled. Edition No. 006 showed the measurements deciding where the work goes. This is where they decide who is weighed at all.
You spent a career becoming the name a committee would shortlist on sight. The committee is losing the pen. Somewhere in your category the next field is being assembled by something that has never been given a way to read you, and the room will fill either way. Whether your name comes up is not decided in the meeting. It is decided before the meeting, in a layer you can write to or be absent from. The list is being drawn now.
